Bern has hardness grade 1–2 — one of the softest tap waters in Switzerland, from the Aare river. Limescale forms slowly. Yet Old Town sanitary installations with original chrome from the 1950s–70s still demand strictly material-neutral methods. Acid forbidden, substance preserved.

Bern enjoys hardness grade 1–2 — among the softest in Switzerland, sourced from the Aare river and Wohlensee reservoir. Limescale deposits form very slowly. That sounds like a straightforward situation — and it is, with one significant "but" .
The "but" is UNESCO Old Town original substance . In Bern's medieval properties, sanitary installations survive with original chrome layers from the 1950s–70s, original silicone from the same era, sometimes authentic ceramics. Acid does not only dissolve the rare limescale here — it dissolves irreplaceable fabric that survived decades of use.
