Sanitary & Descaling
Bern.

Bern has hardness grade 1–2 — one of the softest tap waters in Switzerland, from the Aare river. Limescale forms slowly. Yet Old Town sanitary installations with original chrome from the 1950s–70s still demand strictly material-neutral methods. Acid forbidden, substance preserved.

The Bern situation

Very soft water.
Very old substance.

Bern enjoys hardness grade 1–2 — among the softest in Switzerland, sourced from the Aare river and Wohlensee reservoir. Limescale deposits form very slowly. That sounds like a straightforward situation — and it is, with one significant "but" .

The "but" is UNESCO Old Town original substance . In Bern's medieval properties, sanitary installations survive with original chrome layers from the 1950s–70s, original silicone from the same era, sometimes authentic ceramics. Acid does not only dissolve the rare limescale here — it dissolves irreplaceable fabric that survived decades of use.

We calibrate on two levels: the water (grade 1–2, very soft) and the material (original substance vs. modern). Before the first deployment the material is identified, then the method is chosen — never the other way around.

Soft water is a gift. Original chrome from 1965 is irreplaceable. We treat both accordingly.Muharem Berisha
What acid does

Risks without
material-neutral methods.

Even in Bern's very soft water, the wrong cleaning agent causes irreversible damage to historic sanitary substance. Old Town bathrooms can lose in one treatment what survived half a century.

012 Risk

Original fittings

Original fabric
  • Acid dissolves the original chrome layer on Bern Old Town fittings from the 1950s–70s.
  • One application destroys what has survived 60+ years of daily use.
022 Risk

Original silicone

Fabric gone
  • Old Town bathrooms often retain original joint silicone from the 1960s–80s.
  • Acid makes it porous and brittle, creating direct anchor points for mould growth.
032 Risk

Modern glass shower

CHF 700 replacement
  • In modern MFH districts (Bümpliz, Länggasse): real glass becomes milky from mineral residue.
  • Even with grade 1–2 water, this can occur after 24+ months without treatment.
042 Risk

WC ceramics

CHF 850 replacement
  • Uric scale bonds with even gentle limescale in the water rim.
  • In Bern's very soft water this still develops — visible after 8–12 months in heavily used installations.
How we work

Material first.
Product after.

Four steps — from water verification to sealing. For Old Town original substance especially conservative; for modern installations in Bümpliz and Länggasse efficiently calibrated.

Water verification

On site we confirm the exact hardness
  • On site we confirm the exact hardness.
  • Bern city is at grade 1–2; in outer districts near the cantonal border it can vary slightly.

Chrome layer protection

Mixer taps, tap systems, shower heads. Original chrome in Old Town strictly material-neutral — no acid contact. Modern fittings pH-calibrated. Moving parts cared for.

Recovering clarity

Real glass shower walls in modern flats, glass doors, mirrors. Mineral residue dissolved even from very soft Bern water, sealing preserved — resealed on request.

Preserving original fabric

Original silicone in Thun Old Town bathrooms is irreplaceable — cleaned acid-free only. Modern joints cleaned mineral-based, without wash-out or joint structure damage.

Material analysis first

Method matches the substrate

Before every treatment: material identified. Original chrome, real chrome, stainless steel, natural stone, 1960s ceramics — each gets its specific method. Documentation included.

How it works

Three steps. Clear matter.

01

Enquiry

Form, phone or WhatsApp. You tell us: flat type (Old Town vs. modern district), number of sanitary installations, approximate age of the fabric. Written quote within 4 hours.

02

Appointment

Confirmation within 24 hours. Bern is on our regular ~50-min route via A1/A6 — appointments are plannable, including for the Spital Thun area and Old Town addresses.

03

Result

Sanitary installations clear, fittings shining, joints without discolouration — original fabric intact. 0 acid damage, guaranteed. With sealing on request.

Frequently asked questions

Descaling Thun —
what people ask.

How hard is the tap water in Thun — is it really very soft?+
Yes — Bern city water has hardness grade 1–2, sourced from the Aare river and Wohlensee reservoir. This is among the softest tap water in Switzerland. Limescale forms significantly more slowly than in Aargau (grade 3–4). However, even very soft water deposits minerals over time, especially in heavily used installations.
Why is descaling in Bern's Old Town still a sensitive task despite soft water?+
The water is soft, but the material is old. Bern's UNESCO Old Town properties contain sanitary installations with original chrome layers from the 1950s–70s, original joint silicone from the same era, sometimes authentic ceramics with original surface coatings. Acid dissolves the rare limescale — but simultaneously destroys fabric that has survived 60+ years and cannot be replaced.
Do you also cover the Spital Thun area?+
For descaling and sanitary cleaning in defined non-clinical, administrative and staff areas of the Spital Thun campus: yes. Direct clinical and medical areas fall outside our contract scope. All work in institutional areas is carried out with full hygiene documentation.
Why no vinegar or citric acid?+
Acids dissolve limescale — but they attack chrome layers, silicone between tiles, and the surface sealing of natural stone. In Bern's Old Town this is especially critical: original chrome from the 1960s, original silicone, historic tile coatings. What shines short-term may be irreversibly lost long-term. pH-calibrated agents dissolve limescale and spare the material.
How often should descaling be done in Bern?+
At Bern's grade 1–2 water, 1× yearly is typically sufficient for regularly used installations. In Old Town properties with original fabric, the interval matters less than the method — restrained, material-neutral cleaning once a year beats aggressive cleaning twice a year.
What does sanitary descaling in Thun cost?+
Fixed price by number of sanitary installations, degree of soiling and material. An average flat with bathroom and WC is between CHF 280 and 480. Written quote within 4 hours. Travel costs included in the price (CHF 0 additional).
