Solothurn.

Solothurn water has hardness level 2–3 — softer than Aargau, but old-town original chrome and original silicone demand strictly material-neutral methods. Acid forbidden, substance preserved.

The Solothurn challenge

Softer water.
Older material.

Solothurn water is softer than Aargau water: hardness level 2–3 versus 3–4. That means less aggressive limescale, visible after weeks rather than days. Sounds like an advantage — it is, with one significant "but" .

The "but" is old-town original fabric . In the Baroque properties around the St. Ursen-Kathedrale, sanitary installations are found with original chrome layers from the 1950s–1970s, original silicone, sometimes original ceramics. Acid here does not only dissolve limescale — it dissolves fabric that is lost irreversibly.

We calibrate on two levels: the water (hardness level 2–3) and the material (original fabric vs. modern). Before the first deployment the material is identified, then the method is chosen.

Acid dissolves limescale. It also dissolves fabric that never comes back.Muharem Berisha
What acid does

Risks without
material-neutral methods.

Limescale removers with acid dissolve limescale — and at the same time original fabric that has survived 60–80 years. In Solothurn old-town bathrooms every acid damage is irreversible.

012 Risk

Original fittings

Original fabric
  • Acid dissolves the original chrome layer in old-town bathrooms.
  • What has survived 60 years is lost after one acid application.
022 Risk

Original silicone

Fabric gone
  • Solothurn old-town bathrooms often have original joints from the 1960s–1980s.
  • Acid makes them porous, creating anchor points for mould.
032 Risk

Modern glass shower

CHF 700 replacement
  • In modern residential developments west/east: real glass becomes milky from burnt-in limescale.
  • At hardness 2–3 after 24+ months.
042 Risk

WC ceramics

CHF 850 replacement
  • Uric scale bonds with limescale in the water rim — chemically encrusted.
  • With Solothurn water visible after 8 months.
How we work

Material first.
Product after.

Four steps — from water test to sealing. For old-town original fabric especially conservative; for modern substance efficiently calibrated.

Water analysis

Chrome layer protection

Mixer taps, tap systems, shower heads. Original chrome in old town strictly material-neutral. Modern fittings pH-calibrated. Moving parts cared for.

Silicone & mortar joints

Preserving original fabric

Original silicone in old-town bathrooms is sensitive — clean acid-free or cause damage. Modern joints cleaned mineral-based, without wash-out.

Frequently asked questions

Descaling Solothurn —
what people ask.

How hard is the tap water in Solothurn?+
The city of Solothurn is at hardness level 2–3 — medium hardness. That is softer than Aargau water (3–4), but limescale deposits still form. With regular use and on original coatings, even the milder limescale becomes a problem if tackled with the wrong method.
Why is descaling in the Solothurn old town different?+
Old-town sanitary installations often have original chrome layers from the mid-20th century or older, original silicone, historic ceramics with original coatings. Acid dissolves limescale — but simultaneously destroys the original fabric. We work pH-calibrated, material-neutral.
Do you also clean sensitive areas such as the Bürgerspital?+
Hospital areas are a specialist field. In clearly defined, non-medical areas (administration wing, defined zones, staff sanitary) we carry out sanitary descaling to hygiene standards. Direct medical areas fall outside the contract scope.
Why no vinegar or citric acid?+
Acids dissolve limescale — but they also attack the chrome layer of fittings, the silicone between tiles, the sealing of natural stone. In Solothurn old-town properties with original fabric acid is particularly risky: what shines short-term is irreversibly damaged long-term. pH-calibrated agents dissolve the limescale and spare the material.
How often should descaling be done?+
At Solothurn hardness level 2–3 we recommend 2× yearly for regularly used installations. In old-town properties with original fabric, 1–2× per year is often sufficient — method is more important than frequency. We calibrate to water and material.
What does sanitary descaling in Solothurn cost?+
Fixed price by number of sanitary installations, degree of soiling and material. An average flat with bathroom and WC is between CHF 280 and 480. Written quote within 4 hours. Travel costs included in the price (CHF 0 additional).
